Repair or Replace a Leaking Faucet? What to Compare

A leaking faucet is worth fixing, but replacing the entire fixture is not always the first answer. The location of the leak, condition of the faucet and availability of suitable parts all matter.

At Platinum Plumber, we want a repair or replacement recommendation to solve the actual problem. A new faucet will not correct every leak beneath a sink.

Describe where the water appears

Water dripping from the spout after the handle is off is different from water collecting around the faucet base or inside the cabinet. An under-sink leak may involve a supply connection, drain component or another source.

Dry the accessible area only if it is safe, then note when moisture returns: during use, afterward, or continuously. Photographs can help explain the symptom without taking anything apart.

When repair may make sense

A fixture in otherwise sound condition may have a replaceable worn component. Ask whether the model can be identified, the correct part is available and the surrounding fixture is in suitable condition for the repair.

The brand or appearance alone does not settle the question. A repair estimate should describe what will be replaced and which existing components remain.

When to compare replacement

Replacement may be worth discussing if the fixture is damaged, has repeated problems, lacks available compatible parts, or no longer meets your needs. Compare the full installed scope with the proposed repair rather than comparing a retail faucet price with a service visit.

If you supply the new faucet, confirm sink-hole configuration, clearances, connections and any additional components before buying. Ask how product warranty and installation responsibility will be handled.

Do not overlook the connections below

Accessible shutoffs, supply lines and drain connections may affect the job. Ask whether any necessary changes are included. A faucet replacement proposal should not leave you guessing about a separate under-sink problem discovered during the visit.

  • What is the source of the current leak?
  • What parts or fixture are included?
  • Are removal and disposal included?
  • Will related connections need attention?
  • What additional work requires approval?
  • How will the finished work be checked?

Choose features that fit daily use

Consider handle reach, spout clearance and how you use the sink. A fixture that photographs well may not suit a shallow basin or limited space behind the sink. Match the selection to the actual installation.
